The next morning we went to the Rijksmuseum, of which the most awesome part was seeing Rembrandt's Night Watch - it really is a magnificent painting that you should see at once during your lifetime. After that it was time for the Heineken Experience - a new (revamped in 2008) tour through the Heineken factory, with the coolest exhibitions and things to see on everything beer-related! The beers themselves are served from a frozen tap, keeping them at a refreshing zero degrees:
We also had dinner at the Hard Rock Café in Amsterdam the following evening - a must-see if you're a fan of any kind of rock music - there's rock memorabilia covering the walls, from Jimi Hendrix to Slash and even Blink-182!
The next day, on my way back to Eindhoven, I met up with Gretchén (a fellow South African :) who showed me all around Utrecht, including the Dom Tower and monastery gardens.
This weekend, after spending Friday evening in Leiden with some fellow South Africans, I met up with my parents for the last time before the end of their tour in Dusseldorf, Germany. Dusseldorf is located on the Rhine, probably the most important river in Western Europe:
Apparently there are so many pubs and bars in the Altstadt (Old Town) of Dusseldorf that they call it the "longest bar in the world". Well, here in Eindhoven we have more that 50 pubs and bars in one street, which looks a lot more impressive! For more photos, check out my Flickr photostream!

I am moving to Eindhoven this Thursday for a PDEng program in the department of Industrial design, so we'll be working somewhere near I guess! :D
One question though, in your first email you say "This afternoon I managed to get Internet on my cell phone (10 euros buys you a prepaid SIM card and a month's Internet)".
Can you please give me some more details about that? E.g. what's the name of the carrier and also where can I get one of these pre-paid SIM cards?
I am really worried that I'll die if I have no internet connection! :P

ReplyDeleteYou can get a prepaid SIM card from Vodaphone for €7.50 (I think it's still on special, otherwise €10). €5 is preloaded onto the SIM card, and if you register on the Vodafone website (try to do it at the shop if you don't have internet access elsewhere), you get an additional €5 on your SIM card. You can then buy a €10 Vodafone "Zorgeloos Internet" BloX, which gives you a month of Internet browsing on your phone (but obviously you can connect your phone to your laptop as well). You can buy the prepaid SIM card from any Vodafone shop. There's one in the Piazza close to the Central train station.

Thank God I had an internet connection activated at home, so I'm alive :P hehehe! I got a pre-paid sim card and I'll try to get a contract when possible.
I'll be in the USI program and I'll start this Thursday with all the bureaucratic stuff and the introductory week. I hope to see you around!
